Selma Steiner hailed from an old Jewish family in Bratislava. The Steiners established a used bookstore in 1847, which they managed for several generations until it was Aryanized by a Slovak writer, Ľudo Ondrejov, during the Holocaust. Most members of the family perished; Ms. Steiner survived in Theresienstadt. After the war she remained in Bratislava and worked in the publishing industry. In 1991, Ms. Steiner re-established the family business, the Steiner used bookstore, which became one of the city’s cultural symbols. She initiated and supported a special imprint, ‘Pressburg’, dedicated to the history of Bratislava, at the Marenčín publishing house.
