Chaim Sofer was born in Bratislava as the sixth son (of seven) of Mordechai Sofer, a community official. Chaim studied at the Pressburg yeshiva and was a brilliant student of the Chatam Sofer. He served as rabbi in four communities: Gyömrő (Yemring), Sajószentpéter, Mukachevo (Munkács) and Budapest’s Orthodox community. Sofer was an important authority in Halacha (Jewish law) and a leader of the right wing of Hungarian Orthodox Judaism. He initiated the Michalovce conference in 1865, which laid the path towards the split in Hungarian Jewry. The collection of his rabbinic responsa (1862-1885), Machane Chaim, was published in 8 volumes during his lifetime. He died in Budapest and was buried in Bratislava.
