Ignatz Deutsch - Náhrobok

Ignatz Deutsch was born in Bratislava and studied at the Pressburg Yeshiva as a student of the Chatam Sofer. Later, he settled in Vienna, where he became a private banker for noble families. His most important client was Emperor Franz Joseph I; Deutsch was responsible for managing his private funds. He was awarded the title of the “K.u.K. Hofwechsler” (Imperial and Royal court banker).

Deutsch was an Orthodox Jew and he used his personal influence to lobby on behalf of Orthodox political interests. He supported the Machzikei Hadas society in Galicia and helped to secure recognition of the Pressburg Yeshiva as a theological institution (thus exempting its students from military service). In 1859, Deutsch was appointed “Curator of the Holy Land” a sort of supervisor of Austrian Jewish affairs in Eretz Israel. At the same time, he often intrigued against the Viennese Jewish community leadership and non-Orthodox political interests, which led to his isolation. Deutsch died in Baden near Vienna and was buried in Bratislava. His wife Schifra (d. 1896) is buried next to him.
