Map of Bratislava (1910)

Location

The Orthodox Cemetery is located on the south-western edge of the Bratislava-Staré mesto city district, at Žižkova Street 36. The road was originally called Karloveská cesta (Károlyfalvai út) and it was the main access route to Mlynská dolina, Karlova Ves and Devín. The road was later renamed Podhradská. The Danube embankment was regulated in the 1930s, at which time a new main route was established (today’s Nábrežie armádneho generála Ludvíka Svobodu). From then on, the road beneath the cemetery lost its original importance.

Orthodox cemetery

The cemetery compound covers a slope with a south-western orientation overlooking the Danube River. This view will soon be blocked by the River Park 2 development project. The compound neighbors the Sorea Region Hotel, which was built as a trade union hotel during the communist period. The Catholic St. Nicholas cemetery is to the east. The northern edge of the compound, which is thickly forested and hardly accessible, is defined by the lots of family houses in Fialkové údolie Street.
