Holocaust memorial

Holocaust memorials

Two Holocaust memorials are located in the cemetery compound. The first was installed on the eastern facade of the cemetery chapel, next to a plaque bearing the blessing recited when entering the cemetery. Two plaques, with Hebrew and Slovak texts, were unveiled on October 13, 1963 by Rabbi Eliáš Katz. They are evidence of the communist period, when the Holocaust was not a public theme and memorial activities were initiated by the Jewish Community, and memorials were installed in cemeteries, synagogues and communal premises.

Holocaust memorial

The second Holocaust memorial was erected in 1996, at the initiative of former citizens of Bratislava who by then were resident in Israel. A free-standing monument stands in the U-turn of the access ramp, between sections 1 and 4. The memorial’s text is in Hebrew. An annual remembrance ceremony for Holocaust victims from Bratislava takes place here in late September. The Nazi authorities organized a major round-up of Bratislava’s remaining Jewish residents on September 27-28, 1944, a day after the Yom Kippur holiday.
